JOHN BEERY IS CALLED BY DEATH
Well Known Resident of Decatur Succumbs To Cancer Of Stomach
John Beery, 72, well-known resident of Decatur died at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Clay Engle, corner of Eleventh and Madison streets, at 7 o'clock Saturday night. A post mortum showed that death was due to cancer of the stomach. Mr. Beery had been in poor health for the last few years, but had not been bedfast except for the last four weeks.
Mr. Beery was known to practically all school children of the city for the last several years, he having been janitor of the old gymnasium on First Street for the last six years and at the South Ward school for seven years prior to that time. He was janitor at the Central building part time also. He was forced to give up his work at the old gymnasium several months ago, on account of his health. He was popular with the athletes and everybody using the old gymnasium being very obliging at all times. Before his death he made his desire known that the following school teachers be pall bearers at his funeral: Superintendent M.F. Worthman; Walter Krick, principal of the high school; W. Guy Brown, principal of the Central school; Coach Kennedy, Coach Marshall, and Ralph Tyndall. School was dismissed at the South Ward, Central, and high school building at 3 0'clock this afternoon in order that the pupils and teachers might attend the funeral.
Mr. Beery was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Eli Beery and was born in Adams County, January 11, 1853. He was married to Jane Barnett about 45 years ago. They resided at their home on Winchester Street until Mr. Beery became bedfast four weeks ago and they went to their daughter's home. Mr. Beery attended the Methodist church.
Mr. Beery is survived by his widow; three children, Mrs. Delota Engle and Albert Beery of Decatur, and Paris Beery, of Toledo, Ohio; and two brothers Dan and Chris Beery of Decatur. He was a brother of the late Martin and Reuben Beery, also.
Funeral services were held from the Engle residence at 3:30 o'clock this afternoon, the Rev L.C. Wisner, pastor of the Decatur M.E. circuit, assited by the Rev. B.N. Covert, pastor of the Presbyterian church officiating. Burial was made in the Beery cemetery, west of the city.
