Former Decatur Man Dies This Morning - Daniel Beery Dies At Hospital Today

Daniel W. Beery, 82, formerly of this city, a son of one of the early settlers of this county, and for more than half a century associated with the business life of the community, widely known as a dealer in horses before the auto era, died early this morning at the Methodist Hospital , Fort Wayne , of a paralytic stroke.

Mr. Beery suffered the stroke early Wednesday morning and was removed from his home, 515 East Washington street , Fort Wayne , to the hospital. He did not rally, death occurring at 12:10 a.m.

A son of Eli and Hester Blosser Beery, the former coming to Adams county in 1838, Mr. Beery was born in Washington township, May 30, 1860. He was one of 12 children and was the last surviving member of the family.

Mr. Beery spend most of his life in Decatur . He was engaged in business here, until moving to Fort Wayne about 13 years ago. In the days of the horse and buggy, he operated a livery line and was widely recognized as a dealer and shipper of horses. Many of the finest breeds produced in the county were shipped by him to the east. Prior to leaving Decatur , he operated the Murry, now the Rice hotel. During his 13 years absence from the city, he lived two years in Los Angeles .

Mr. Beery was married to Miss Etta Hower of this city. Besides the widow, he is survived by three children, Mrs. Jess O. Sellemeyer of Los Angeles ; Lloyd D. Beery, of San Marino , Calif. , and Arthur M. Beery of San Diego , Calif. , a retired army officer; five grandchildren, and one great grandchild. One daughter, Mrs. Dessie Dailey, died in 1919.

The deceased was a member of the First Methodist church and of the Masonic lodge.

The body will be brought to the Zwick funeral home North Second street , and may be viewed Sunday afternoon, until time of the funeral, which has not yet been fixed, pending word from the children.
