Edward Galen Beeman, 86, of New Memory Lane, Lonaconing, died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006, at Egle Nursing Home, Lonaconing.
Born Jan. 21, 1920, in Lonaconing, he was the son of the late George Edward Beeman and Annie Lucretia Lou (Llewellyn) Beeman.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Iva Spiker and Leah Northcraft; five infant siblings; four brothers-in-law; and one sister-in-law.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Lonaconing, a past commander and financial secretary of James P. Love Post 92, served in the United States Army Air Corp. during World War II from 1943-1945 receiving the European-African/Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon with two bronze and one silver battle star; Distinguished Unit Badge; and Good Conduct Medal, and retired after 43 years of service from the Westvaco Paper Mill as a supervisor in 1984. He was a member of Georges Creek Valley Masonic Lodge 161 A.F.&A.M., a member of Scottish Rite Bodies of Cumberland, Ali Ghan Shriners, Junior Order of the United American Mechanics Temple Counsel 3 of Denton, Martha Washington Eastern Star Chapter 10, International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge 94, Barton, 40 & 8 Voiture Locale 161 of Cumberland, past treasurer of Lions Club of Lonaconing, Senior Citizens of Lonaconing, a life member of Farrady Post 24 American Legion, Frostburg, a life member of Henry Hart Post 1411 of Cumberland, a past district commander of the Mountain District American Legion and the Lonaconing Republicans Club.
He was a former member of Georges Creek Homing Pigeon Club and various other pigeon clubs in the Tri-State area. Galen enjoyed training his pigeons and traveled many miles to release the birds. Next to his wife Edna and his family, pigeons were his life. He was also a member of Del's Mixed Bowling League of LaVale. He bowled until 2002 when Alzheimer's overcame him. Galen enjoyed his family and loved to watch the grandchildren growing up through the years.
He is survived by his wife, Edna Marie (Miller) Beeman with whom he celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on April 20, 2006, held at Egle Nursing Home; one daughter, Sandra Kay Youngblood and husband Dennis, Lonaconing; five grandchildren, Luretta Emerick and friend Will Gomer, Frostburg, Gail Winebrenner and fiancé Steve Baker, Lonaconing, Kenneth Lease, Lonaconing, Leah Youngblood, Midland, and Nathan Youngblood, Midland; nine great-grandchildren, Heather Ginty and husband Leo, Ashley Emerick, Victoria Emerick, Pvt. Jesse Winebrenner, Breanna Duncan, Brady Baker, Mason Baker, Justin Youngblood and Caity Baker; two great-great-grandchildren, Leo Ginty V and Autymn Ritchey; three sisters, Agnes Wolford, Cresaptown, Althea Shaw, LaVale, and Norma Brode and husband Paul, Lonaconing; one brother, Edison Beeman, Flintstone; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, P.A., (eichhorn-mckenziefh.com) Lonaconing, on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Masonic service will be held at 7:30 p.m. and a Lions Club memorial service will be held at 8 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday, Nov. 10, 2006, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Tom Morgan and the Rev. Rick Morley officiating.
Interment will be held at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Moscow Mills.
Graveside military rites will be accorded by Farrady Post 24 American Legion, Frostburg.
