Son of Denver, Colorado fireman Clarence Bedwell and his wife Alice, PFC Alan W.Bedwell was captured by the Japanese at Fort Mills (Corregidor), Philippine Islands. His last known place of internment was at Nielsen Airfield POW camp.

Many POWs were sent to labor camps in Japan. This was the intended fate of Alan Bedwell. He and more than 1700 U.S. and Allied prisoners were herded aboard the unmarked ship, Arisan Maru. The ship was sunk by Allied torpedoes. Alan survived the sinking, but was executed by gunshot as he attempted to escape.
