Tommy was born in Slaton on October 1, 1932 to Alfons and Hilda Bednarz. He lived his life in Wilson and graduated from Wilson High School in 1949. He married the love of his life, Margaret Mary Heinrich, on January 6, 1953. He was in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955, serving in the 175th Artillery Battalion. He was stationed at Camp Rucker, AL and Fort Benning, GA and achieved the rank of Sergeant. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
Tommy was a lifelong farmer and carpenter and enjoyed spending time with his family after his retirement in 1998. He had a strong faith in God and lived his life accordingly. He was known as "Opa" to his grandchildren. He was loved by many and an inspiration to all who knew him.
He was a member of the Wilson Lions Club and served as club President, District Zone Chairman, Deputy District Governor, and Director of the Crippled Children's Camp in Kerrville and was awarded an Honorary Lifetime Membership. He served on the Wilson ISD School Board for 18 years. He was named Honorary Chapter Farmer to the Wilson FFA. He was a member of Catholic Life Insurance and served as branch president and State Deputy Director. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Slaton, served on the parish council, and was a past Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus. He also served on the parish council at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Wilson and on the Lynn County Appraisal Review Board. He was named Farmer of the Year in 1997.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret, and their children, Steven and Donna Bednarz of Temple, Denise and Tom Stilz of Addison, Michael and Nell Bednarz of Katy, Greg Bednarz of Amarillo, Phillip and Vivian Bednarz of Magnolia, Kathleen and Don Weaver of Lubbock, Tim and Deniece Bednarz of Arlington, Sharon and Greg Hernandez of Keller, Bryan and Rachael Bednarz of Lubbock, Justin and Dawn Bednarz of Houston, Jeff and Jennifer Bednarz of Houston, and former daughter-in-law Charmone Bednarz of Amarillo; 23 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Gladys Cutshall; son, Gary; and a granddaughter, Barbara Denise Stilz.
