James William Franklin Bedgood born in 1842, was the only son of John Richard and Rhoda Brantley Ely Bedgood. They lived in Washington County, Georgia and were farmers.

James married Mary Jane Hanson on June 21, 1861. They had six children together: James William Franklin Bedgood, Jr, Martha Elizabeth Bedgood, Virginia Mary Bedgood, John Thomas Bedgood, Amanda Louvenia Bedgood, and Joseph Solomon Bedgood. The family did well and prospered until Mary Jane's illness and death in April 1887. Mary was buried here in the Bedgood Family Cemetery.

James fought in the Civil War for the C.S.A. He enlisted as a Private, in Co E, 32nd Reg, GA Inf. He Served in G.P. Harrison's Brigade, Dept of SC, and participated in conflicts in James Island, SC, Waynesboro, GA and Olustee, FL. James was involved in the defense of Savannah when Sherman came thru GA. He was Paroled Apr 1865 at the end of the war.

On October 20, 1887, James married Mary Frances 'Mamie' Tanner Burns. She had children from her first marriage to bring to their home, and James had children from his first marriage still to care for. Together they blended their families and started one of their own by having the following children together: Mattie Mae Bedgood, Susie Bedgood, Rawlings Bedgood, and Bycelle Daniel Bedgood (my grandfather).

When James died in 1915, he was laid to rest near his parents-John Richard and Rhoda Brantley Ely Bedgood, and his first wife Mary Jane Hanson Bedgood. His second wife Mamie Tanner Bedgood later remarried and passed away in 1935. She was buried near her mother in Sandersville, GA.
