Wood County (Quitman) Democrat, Thu 15 Dec 1931, Dr. Becton Dies After Long Illness, BELOVED PHYSICIAN DIES IN GREENVILLE, Succumbs After Operation, Lived Life of Usefulness and Leader Of His Profession

GREENIVLLE, Texas, Oct. 14 - Dr. Joe Becton, 66, widely known Texas surgeon, a member of the State Board of Medical Examiners, and prominent Greenville civic worker, died at his hospital her Wednesday, following an operation performed Monday in an effort to relieve a condition caused by kidney disorder. He had been in ill health for more than a year, but had been confined to his bed for only six weeks.

Last rites will be observed Thursday afternoon at 4 o’clock at Kavanaugh Methodist church, conducted by Dr. T.O. Perrin assisted by the Rev. Paul Martin. Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery.

Born at Kilgore

Dr. Becton was born in Kilgore. He graduated at Austin College and received his medical degree from the University of Nashville.

In 1901 he gave up his general practice and has since devoted his attention to surgery entirely. He established his first hospital in the city of Greenville in 1901.

Gov. Dan Moody appointed Dr. Becton to the State Medical Board shortly after his election. Gov. Ross S. Sterling reappointed him to a six-year term.

Dr. Becton was affiliated with local, state and national surgical and medical organizations and also was a former professor of pathological survey, Baylor University. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgery, the American Medical Association, and was ex-president of the Medical association of the Southwest, ex-president of the Tri-State Medical Society, composed of Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas; president of the Texas Medical Association in 1922-23; ex-vice president of the Texas Surgical Society, ex-president of of the Northeast Texas District Medical Association and ex-president of the Hunt County Medical Society.

Active Civil Worker

Dr. Becton was active in chamber of commerce work for several years and served as president of that organization [unreadable] his efficient services. He was president of the Hunt County Fair Association, a Rotarian, Odd Fellow and Knight of Pythias. He was one of the leaders in securing the first good roads for Hunt county and was active in many other undertakings for the benefit of Greenville and Hunt county.

Surviving are a son, Dr. Joe Becton, Jr.; two daughters, Mayme and Anna Becton Coullier; a brother, Dr. E.F. Becton, all of this city, and a sister, Mrs. J.J. Nunnally, of Fort Worth.

Dr. Joe, as he was lovingly called by his thousands of friends, was well known in Wood county, having spent several years of his early life in and around Quitman. For several years, he was a clerk in the store of Captain McKnight at Quitman, and it was while he was employed by Captain McKnight that he saved the money with which he secured his education at the University of Nashville.

All of Wood county will mourn the death of Dr. Joe for he really was a man that endeavored to make life better for his fellow man, and Wood county, the state of Texas and the nation is indeed blessed because he lived.
