"The bodies of two Valley men, B H Beckmeyer and William Newton Harrison were
recovered from a sewer system manhole yesterday. They are believed to have
suffocated in the sewer line which Beckmeyer had entered to repair a float line.
Harrison was not an employee of the city, but is believed to have been asked by Beckmeyer to accompany him in case he needed help. A verdict of suffocation and
drowning was made.
The 2 men were last seen about 10:30 am Thursday. At noon Mrs. Beckmeyer became worried when her husband did not return home for lunch. She called the city
clerk, who then notified the mayor. The 2 men went to the manhole and found a car and some tools, but no sign of the men. They stirred the the water and found some hair and the fire department was called and recovered the bodies.
Funeral services are set for 3pm Saturday with burial at Roselawn Cemetery in McAllen.
