Elihu was the first-born of Joshua Mayberry Beckham and Catharine Hinkle. On 13 December 1869 Elihu married Rhoda Elizabeth Lancaster. They had the following children: Ewing, Isolena Cassandra, Romulus Mayberry, Elvin Monroe, Dona May, Dow Malone, Minnie Catharine, and Alpha Rae. Elihu served the Confederacy during the Civil War: Pvt, Co D, 14th Arkansas Infantry, Commanded by C. C. Elkins; Sgt, Co K, 21 Arkansas Infantry, spring of 1862; POW at Point Lookout. Elihu was elected Stone County Tax Assessor several times, one time on the People's ticket. He was also an assistant teacher at Flatwoods school after the Civil War.
