Joseph Becker was the son of Urban and Anna Maria (Spross) Becker of Rockenhausen, Germany. They emigrated to Illinois in 1851. Joseph was married to Charlotte (Phillipina) Frey and Barbara Graf and according to one newspaper account, Catherine Wamser, though no marriage record has been found. He died because of a Memorial Day accident, involving a runaway team of horses.
