Nick Beck

Many friends were grieved and shocked to learn of the death of Nick Beck, a highly respected resident of this city, which occurred Saturday evening at 7 o’clock, having been ill only a day. Death was due to hardening of the arteries.

The deceased was born in Guenterblum, Hessen, Dormstadt, Germany, on September 9, 1866, being past 60 years of age at his death. With his brother, Jacob Beck and sister, Mrs. Lena Peters, both being now of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, he came to this country in 1884 and settled in the vicinity of Melrose.

In 1889 he married to Mrs. Anton Beck, whose maiden name was Minnie Kind. This union was blessed with two children. By this marriage he also became step-father of three children. He engaged in farming here until 1916 when he moved to Power, Montana, to engage in farming. His wife died in May 1920. Shortly after he returned to Melrose and had been employed as section hand for the G. N. On January 13, 1923 he married to Mrs. Emma Janecke of Sauk Centre. By the marriage be became step-father to one son.

Mr. Beck is survived by his second wife, 2 sisters, 2 brothers, daughters, 1 step-daughter, 3 step-sons and 3 grand-children.

The brothers and sisters are: Jacob Beck of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, William Beck of Guensterluem, Germany, Mrs. Lena Peters of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Margaret Sauervein of Germany. The children and step-children are as follows: Mrs. Fred Schwanke of Dexter, Minnesota, Jake Beck of Great Falls, Montana, Anton Beck and Mrs. J. A. Primus of Power, Montana, Mrs. Emil Neumann of Minneapolis and Arnold Janecke of St. Paul.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon with services at the Lutheran church and interment at Sauk Centre. Rev. Paul Gierke officiated.

Nicholas Beck immigrated about 1884 with his brother, Jacob, and his sister, Lena who married UK Peters. Nick married Wilhelmina "Minnie" Kind on November 7, 1887 in Melrose, Minnesota. He worked for the Great Northern Railroad as a section hand and also farmed for many years.
