Death of Edwin A. Beck.
His Sudden and Unexpected Death on Friday Last.
Mr. Edwin A. Beck, who has been engaged in the undertaking and furniture business in this place since 1867, died on Friday last, after an illness of three days. The cause of his death was an aggravated case of La Grippe combined with pneumonia. He suffered intense pain until his spirit took flight to its heavenly home. The news of his death caused an expression of deep sorrow from everyone. Mr. Beck was well known to almost everyone. He was a man who had endeared himself to us by long acquaintance; a genial disposition, the warmth of his affections and the honest and integrity of his convictions. He was born in Lancaster county, Nov. 24th, 1823 and died in the 68th year of his age. He left his native county in 1849 and located in Altoona; on the 9th of January 1851, he married Miss Matilda McCrum of Mifflin, PA. He resided in Altoona until 1865 when he removed to this place, where he accepted a position in the railroad companys planing mill, which he held for two years. In 1867 he commenced the undertaking and furniture business in John Smith, Esq.s building on Erie avenue, between Fifth and Sixth streets, where he continued business until his death. During Mr. Becks residence here he served one term as councilman, several terms as school director and Overseer of the Poor. He was prominently identified with Odd Fellowship, having been a charter member of Lodge No. 595, and passed the chairs. He was also a consistent member of the M. E. Church for 41 years. He leaves a wife and three sons, T. M. C., Ward, and Edwin D., all of whom have grown to maturity. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Rebecca Rich, and a brother W. D. Beck of Conshohocken, Pa.
