Death: Jan. 21, 2012

Luella Fay (Buchanan-Muller) Bechtel 1923 - 2012

In the early quiet morning of Jan 21st, former Idaho resident Fay Bechtel, 88, passed away peacefully at her daughter's home in Boring, Oregon. She had been suffering from Alzhiemers disease and had recently broken her hip & gotten pneumonia.

Fay was born in Roseberry, Idaho, the eldest of six children to Edgar & Ruby Buchanan. She was raised in Roseberry and attended high school in Donnelly, Idaho. She worked in a packing plant there, sorting peas and said many times it was her favorite job. That may have led to her later enjoyment of vegetable gardening and home canning.

In 1940 she married Ross D Muller, of Council, Idaho. They made their home in New Meadows, Idaho. Ross was a logger and many summers Ross, Fay and their children stayed in logging camps around the Warm Lake & Deadwood area. Ross and Fay were divorced after 17 years.

Fay remained in New Meadows raising their four children and worked as a waitress for many years at the Pine Knot Café. She met Vern Bechtel from Long Valley there and they were married in 1962. They lived in New Meadows before moving to Boise, Idaho. Fay worked as a waitress in Meridian & Vern was a welder.

In 1965 Fay and Vern moved their family to Gresham, Oregon. Vern worked as a welder in Portland & Fay worked in a plant nursery. In 1976 they moved to Cove, Oregon, planning their retirement there.

Fay loved to work in her yard and had a special way with flowers. She also enjoyed quilt making, crocheting, ceramics and reading until her eyesight failed her. In her younger years she played the guitar.

Fay loved all animals, especially dogs & cats, which were always part of their family. If any strays needed a home, they were always welcome. Faye also volunteered at the Cove library.

In Sept. 2010 Fay moved to her daughter & son-in-law's home in Boring, Oregon, due to health problems, so she could have help.

Fay is survived by her husband of 49 years, Vern Bechtel, of Cove, OR; sons: Ron Muller (Mary), of Caldwell, ID, Monte Muller, of Gresham, OR, Mike Bechtel, of Boring, OR, and Kelly Bechtel, of Gresham, OR; daughter, Carol Alexander (Larry), of Boring, OR; brothers: Eldon Buchanan (Elda), of Meridian, ID, and Allen Buchanan (Louise), of Weiser, ID; sisters, Lois Hunt, of Gresham, OR, and Mildred Martin, of Bakersfield, CA; 12 grandchildren; and many great- and great-great-grandchildren; and lots of nieces and nephews whom she treasured.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved sister, Irene (Sis) Draper, of Caldwell, ID; and just recently in November, her eldest son, Bill Muller (Shirley), of Longview, WA passed away. We know she will be reunited with them all in Heaven.

Fay's loving kindness and her iconic presence will leave a hole in the hearts of her family and she will be forever loved & missed.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Sandy Funeral Home in Sandy, OR. The services will be held Thursday Feb 2nd at 12:30 pm at The Holly view Baptist church in Damascus, OR. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Gresham, OR.

Donations can be made in her name Hollyview church fund at 14095 SE 257th. Damascus, OR 97089 or Mt. Hood Hospice, P.O. Box 1269, Sandy, OR 97055
