He graduated from Treynor High School in 1956 and engaged in farming with his father. Bernie married Karen Schumacher on December 5, 1958, in Treynor, Iowa. They were blessed with 3 daughters, Machelle, Jolene, and Beverly, and one son, James. Bernie and Karen moved to the family farm in 1963 and Bernie continued farming until his retirement.
He and his father-in-law, Burnel Schumacher, owned the B&B Lounge for several years and Bernie also worked at Sutherland Lumber for over a decade as the "gate guy." Bernie enjoyed organizing family trips, spending time with his pals in Mineola, watching sports and catching up with friends and family via phone. He was a lifelong member of Zion Congregational Church in Treynor.
Bernie was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Karen; and his father-in-law.
Survived by daughters, Machelle (Joseph) Mitchell, of Treynor, Jolene (Ian) Gewin, of Cosby, Mo., Beverly (Marlon) McKenzie, of Treynor; son, James, of Council Bluffs; mother-in-law, Virginia Schumacher, of Treynor; grandchildren, Shawnna (Justin) Kroeger, of Smithville, Mo., Joey (Jennifer) Gewin, of St. Louis, Mo., Jake McKenzie and Cole McKenzie, both of Treynor; great-grandchildren, Maddie and Ellie Kroeger, of Smithville, Mo.; sister-in-law, Jonell Forrester, of Treynor; niece, nephews and many cousins.
