Bernard L. Beaudoin , 81, of Wilbraham, retired Air Force colonel who served during three wars, died Sunday in Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.

On Dec. 7, 1941, the day Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, he was the officer-of-the-day at Pope Field at Fort Bragg, N.C. He served with the 440th Troup Carrier Group and was also an adviser to the Free French Air Force during World War II. He was also a meteorologist and squadron commander, opening the first weather station north of the Arctic Circle in Thule, Greenland.

He also served during the Korean and Vietnam wars, completing his service in 1963 with the Strategic Air Command.

He was later a professor of air science and tactics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., and also taught science and was a vice-principal at Center Junior High School in Chicopee.

Born in Holyoke, he had lived as a youth in Chicopee. He was a graduate of Chicopee High School and the University of Rhode Island.

He moved to Wilbraham 28 years ago. He was a communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Church in Springfield.

He was also an amateur radio operator, with the call sign W1-MYZ and a member of the American Radio Relay League. He was a member of the American Legion, the Longmeadow Country Club and the Rho Iota Kappa fraternity.

He leaves his wife, the former Grace McMahon; a son, B. Paul of Danbury, Conn.; a daughter, Roberta B. Bolduc of Longmeadow; and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be Thursday morning at T.P. Sampson Co. Chapel of the Acres and in the church with a private burial. Calling hours are Wednesday afternoon and evening.
