Death of Capt BL Beaty
Georgetown Loses a Good Man and Prominent Citizen
Our whole community was greatly shocked to learn of the sudden death of Capt BL Beaty which sad event occurred at about two o'clock on Wednesday last at his residence on Prince Street in this city.
Capt Beaty was one of the city's most useful citizens not only in the business world but in church work also never missing an opportunity for doing good where it was most needed. Many regrets were expressed by all classes of people when it became known that this good man had gone to his reward.
For a number of years Capt Beaty has held the responsible position of manager of the Clyde Line Steamship Company's Business in this city under the agency of Messrs H Kaminski & Co. His business ability well fitted him for the position and although advanced in age he was active in the discharge of the duties developing upon him. At the time of his death Capt Beaty was 74 years of age.
As a church and Sunday school worker Capt Beaty had no superior anywhere and I point of fact very few equals. The Methodists of the city will greatly miss him but especially will his death be felt by the West End Church of which he was a devoted member superintendent of its Sunday School and chairman of its board of trustees and board of stewards.
Before making Georgetown his home Capt Beaty resided in Horry County and for a number of years was a member of the well known firm of WL Buck & Co of Bucksville. He also served a number of terms in the legislature of South Carolina as a member from Horry County.
As a boy he left the Citadel to go to the war and was soon made Captain of Company K 26th South Carolina infantry of Judge JH Hudsons regiment remaining in service until the close of the struggle. Capt Beaty leaves a wife and one daughter Miss Nannie Beaty.
Owing to the absence of Rev JB Mahaffey Capt Beaty's pastor the funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock at Duncan Methodist Church. Rev Henry J Cauthen officiating and his remains tenderly laid to rest in Elmwood Cemetery.
The following acted as pall bearters Honary Capt WA Black, Mr WD Morgan, Mr H Kaminski Mr GB Shackelford, Mr WW Taylor Mr HL Smith Mr JI Hazzard, Mr JB Steele and Mrs EL Bost.
Active Mr JJ McKeithen Mr JB Johnson Mr TS McConnell Mr JC Lowrimore Mr LM Overton and Mr TE Ainsmith.
