The son of William & Carlotta Beatty, in 1850 he lived with his family in Marietta, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Although not found in the 1860 census, he then was a shoemaker by trade and stood 5' 4" tall with black hair and gray eyes. A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Cumberland County May 8, 1861, at the stated age of twenty-four, mustered into federal service at Washington DC July 27 as a private with Co. H, 7th Pennsylvania Reserves (36th Pennsylvania Infantry), and honorably discharged at term's end June 16, 1864. He also enlisted in Harrisburg August 26, 1864, again claiming to be twenty-four years old, mustered into federal service there August 27 as a corporal with Co. D, 202nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865. In 1890, he was a resident of the soldiers' home in Erie County.
