He died of cancer on his ranch in Soledad Canyon near Las Cruces, New Mexico. He wanted to be buried on the ranch at a spot that the whole canyon is viewble from. He was an Angora goat rancher. His ranch was known as Beasley Ranch.
Of his children, George Russell Beasley II was the only one delivered by a doctor. This was in Las Cruces, New Mexico. George II died 3 days later. The only child of George Russell I and Sarah Virginia Briley Beasley to be delivered by a doctor and then die after birth. His son, Chester was delivered by his oldest sister Eva. All other children were delivered by a mid-wife.
Paternal grandparents were Pvt. Austin Beasley, Sr. (a Revolutionary War Soldier & large land owner), and Polly Mary Hollingsworth Carroll Beasley. Maternal grandparents were William C. "Buck" and Elander Martha Reed Powell.
Sarah Beasley's mom Mary E. Phillips Briley 46 and brother Cage (Cader) Briley 21, Cage Briley's infant son John Willie Briley along with William S. Beasley 16, who was the son of William Reed Beasley who died in Virginia during the Civil War, Austin Beasley Jr. and wife Eleanor Reed Powell Beasley, daugther Irene Missouri Beasley and her husband Sam Mauldin and Everett (Elbert) Bass "Bud" Beasley were part of the family of 13 who travelled from Dale County, Alabam to Brown County, Texas in 1879. George, his wife Sarah, their 2 sons Austin and Amos and Sarah's mom and brother left in 1883 to Weed, New Mexico in 1887. This was the worst winter on record where cattle froze standing up and not found until spring. George Russell Beasley and family joined with the Issac's family who were from NC and went west across the Tularosa Basin into Soledad Canyon, NM. The Beasley's built a lean to shelter placing tarps on a horizontal Oak Tree branch which is still standing today. Across the road is the rock corrals that still stand and the fire pit that has broken chard's of pottery that was used to cook with back in 1888 by the Beasley's.
Austin Jr. and wife Eleanor went to Brown County, Texas to visit daughter and son w/ the family of 13. Austin Jr. was looking at land while Eleanor returned with son Everett Bass Beasley back to Alabama. It looks like Austin Jr. loved to venture around to different locations but died in Dale County, Alabama on his land. A letter that George Russell Beasley wrote to his sister "Sack", asked her about land in the area where she lived. Was George Russell 'Rus' Beasley thinking of pulling out of New Mexico and moving to Florida where his sister Sack lived?
Kenneth Ned Beasley, his son Ned Scott Beasley and Cousin Mark Arthur Beasley hiked into Soledad Canyon and Beasley Canyon on June 19, 2009. Ned and Scott's visit to this canyon was the first time in 176 years that any Beasley from the east coast (NC) had been on that land.
