Son of James H. 'Buddy' and Amy Pearl (Petree) Beasley (known as 'Pearl'). Brother to James H. Beasley, Jr., who died young.

Robert was a Flight Officer in the US Army Air Corps during World War II, and was serving as co-pilot of a B-24 Liberator when it was lost in a crash into Lake Pepin near Lake City, Minnesota. The crew was transferring the aircraft from the St. Paul, Minnesota modification base to another base, when it was caught in a heavy snowstorm. The aircraft crashed through the ice, and into the lake. Robert and two other crew members--Capt. Dan D. Mitchell, who served as pilot, and Edward A. Demski, an enlisted man--were recovered on 21 Apr 1945. Robert was accompanied back to Texas by his parents, his uncle Clarence, and his aunt Beulah. Funeral services in Lubbock and burial in Abilene were held on 27 Apr 1945.

Additional information on the crash of the B-24 into Lake Pepin is available in the following articles: "There’s a WWII bomber on the bottom of Lake Pepin — but where?" (MinnPost, 21 Oct 2016; also archived), and "The Day WWII Came to Lake Pepin" (Big River Magazine, Nov-Dec 2007; also archived)
