Alvin J. Bear, age 52, of the Meskwaki Settlement, rural Tama, died on Sunday, June 18, 2006, in Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center due to a sudden illness. Traditional Graveside Services will be held on Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at 2:00 PM at the Meskwakie Indian Burial Grounds on the Settlement with burial following. A wake will be held this evening at the Bear Clan Ceremonial Building on the Meskwaki Settlement, rural Tama. Alvin J. Bear was born on November 12, 1953, on the Meskwaki Settlement, rural Tama, Iowa, the son of Homer Sr. and Dorothy Waseskuk Bear. He graduated from South Tama County High School. He was previously employed by Maytag in Newton for several years and most recently employed at Meskwaki Settlement School as a cultural coordinator. Alvin was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Waseskuk Bear; one sister, Arlene Kay Bear; and two brothers, Gaylord Lee Bear and Russell Derick Bear.
Survivors include his wife Gia Brown-Bear of Tama; his children, Avis, Wesley, Clinton, and Dayton Bear all of Tama and Corey Hindsley of Wisconsin Dells, WI; one stepson, Ellis Gloshay of Tama; one stepdaughter, Shoshonis Brown of Tama; his father, Homer Bear Sr. of Tama; three brothers, Homer Bear Jr., Adolph Bear and Benjamin Bear all of Tama; four sisters, Karen Morris, Aldean Bear, and Ardelia Davenport all of Tama, and Jeanette Moore of Cedar Rapids; and seven grandchildren.
Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
