Godfrey was a stone cutter by trade. He came to Pennsylvania by way of Glasgow, Scotland with three brothers. One stayed in PA and the other came with him to Camden, SC, to work on the construction of the US Military Academy, which was to be built in the area. The Congress defeated the proposition by one vote, in 1802 and it was built at West Point. He cut his own gravestone and devised his own epitaph, which has been lost due to overgrowth of brush and vandalism. His tombstone reads "In memory of Godfrey Beamguard, who departed this life August the 31, 1839. Adieu all both far and near, my loving wife and children, For my immortal soul has fled, I now lie numbered with the dead. Remember friends as you pass by, As you are now, so once was I, As I am now, so you must be, Prepare for death and follow me." He is buried at Old Center Cemetery, Wiggins Rd., Clover SC. His will was probated 10/1/1839, Will book 2, page 72. Godfrey divided his land between his living sons at his death, with Adam as executor. The plantation of Godfrey was in York Co., and named Bennet's Knob. It consisted of 532 acres on Allison Creek and was purchased from Agustus Briant.

He shows on the 1810 Census in Chester County, South Carolina as Godfrey Bumgard.

He shows on the 1830 Census in Fairfild County, South Carolina as Godfrey Beamyord.

He shows on the 1835 Mount Olivet Presbyterian Church records on a petition to be incorporated.
