Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in Norway, Maine, he was a prominent and successful businessman when he enlisted in the Union Army at the start of the Civil War. Commissioned a Captain in the 1st Maine Volunteers, he was appointed Colonel in command of the 10th Maine Volunteer Infantry in October 1861. He led his regiment in actions at the Battle of Second Bull Run and was wounded at the Battle of Antietam. In May 1863, he was placed in command of the 29th Maine Volunteer Infantry, which took part in the Red River and Shenandoah campaigns. For his service at the Battle of Gettysburg and Battle of Cedar Creek, he was promoted Brigadier General, US Volunteers in November 1864, assigned to duty in North Carolina. In 1865, he was brevetted Major General in command of the eastern district of South Carolina, serving until he mustered out of the Army in January 1866. After the war, he was active in the Grand Army of the Republic, was Adjutant General of the state militia and was the Maine State Treasurer. He died of heart disease at age 71 in Norway, Maine. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
