Jack R. Beach, 86, of West Terre Haute died at 9:05 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He retired from Public Service Indiana at the Dresser Power Plant after many years of service as a supervisor of the traveling maintenance.

He was born Nov. 1, 1918, in Vigo County to Joseph Beach and Della B. Swindle Beach. His wife, Jane Weisbach Beach, preceded him in death in 1974.

Survivors include three daughters, Jan Medley and Jackie Reel, both of West Terre Haute and Joan Edwardson of Danville, Ill.; one son, Joseph Beach of East Moline, Ill.; a special friend, Helen Evans of Terre Haute; six grandchildren, Scott Marvel of West Terre Haute, Jennifer Edwardson and Jill Edwardson, both of Danville, Zachary Reel of West Terre Haute, Jessica Beach and Jacob Beach, both of East Moline; three great-grandchildren, Kyle, Anthony and Hailey Marvel, all of West Terre Haute. He also was preceded in death by three sisters, Maxine Davis, Alma Martin and Charlotte Strode.

He was a graduate of the former Concannon High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He entered the service in December 1941, being one of the first draftees to leave for duty after the declaration of war. He was attached to the 526th Engineer Light Pontoon Company. As a staff sergeant, upon returning from overseas he was decorated with the Soldier's Medal, a seldom-publicized but one of the highest of military honors for valor on the battlefield, where he rescued a seriously wounded comrade from a thickly sown enemy minefield. In newspaper articles about this, he was referred to as "a modest sort of hero."

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972, American Legion Post 501, West Terre Haute Lodge 687 Free & Accepted Masons, Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute and Zorah Shrine Temple of Terre Haute.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Chris Wilbur officiating. Burial is in Bethesda Cemetery, with graveside military rites by VFW Post 972.

Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday with Masonic services at 7 p.m. by Lodge 687. There will also be visitation from 9 a.m. until services Friday. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
