Former Alaska resident Master Sgt. (Ret.) George W. Baynes, 69, of Columbus, Ga., died Nov. 4, 1997, at his home. A funeral Mass was at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Interment with full military honors followed at the Main Post Cemetery, Fort Benning, Ga. A prayer service was held at Striffler Hamby Funeral Home in Columbus.


Born April 3, 1928, in Rosedale, Miss., he was a veteran of the U.S. Army who served 28 years. He also was a decorated Vietnam veteran. He was stationed near Fairbanks from 1968 to 1970. Master Sgt. Baynes is survived by his wife, Clotilde Baynes; two daughters; three sons, including George Jr. of Anchorage; one sister; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
