PEKIN ~ Marion H. Bayles, 101, formerly of 1103 Jefferson St. passed away at 5:00 p.m., Sunday, September 17, 2006 at Hallmark House Nursing Center in Pekin.
Born March 21, 1905 on the family farm near Jewel, Kansas to Guy and Fannie (Brackett) Harrison, she married Clarence F. Bayles on February 28, 1931 in Jewel. He died in 1979. She also was preceded in death by 1 son, James Bayles; 1 brother; and 2 sisters.
Surviving are 1 daughter, Janet (Robert) Heberer of St. Libory; 5 grandchildren, Kathleen (Ed) Weilbacher of Waterloo, James (Mary) Heberer of Millstadt, Robert Heberer of Rolla, Missouri, Julia (Dennis) Graul of Okawville, and James Bayles of Chicago; four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
Marion received a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics from Kansas State Agricultural College at Manhattan, Kansas. She also completed graduate studies at Illinois State University and Cornell University. She was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority.
From 1958 to 1969, Marion lived in Isfahan, Iran (Old Persia) while on a Foreign Tour of Service with the United States Department of State as her husband was doing agricultural advisory work with Iranian Nationals. Their tour of service included Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Germany, Greece, Lebanon, Jerusalem, Jordan, India, Thailand, China and Japan.
Marion was a Home Economics teacher at Pekin Community High School District 303 for 16 years, retiring in 1970. She previously taught 3 years at Holdrege, Nebraska.
She was a member of Chapter LM of the P.E.O. Sisterhood.
A member of Grace United Methodist Church in Pekin, she was a former member of the Jewell Baptist Church, where she was baptized into the Christian faith.
Her memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, September 21, 2006 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Gary L. Ford will officiate. The family will greet friends following the service at the funeral home. Private burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.
