Per Deborah (Baxter) Fink:

My father's baby book lists James Baxter and Hannah Morrison in the family tree at the back of the book.

James and Hannah were married in Howard County, Missouri on July 15, 1823.

on the 1850 Census in Blue Twp, Jackson County, Missouri the following family is listed on Ancestry.com:

Household Members:
Name Age
James Barter 47
Hannah Barter 50
Jerome Barter 22
Edward Barter 17
James Barter 20
Marshal Barter 14
Henry C Barter 6
Mortica Wadley 27
Eliza Wadley 25
Martha J Wadley 0
Elizabeth Baxter 19

Whomever transcribed the Census listed the family as Barter it clearly reads Baxter to me.

In or around 1859 James and Hannah moved west with some other family members in hopes of making it in the Gold Rush.

James W. Baxter must have stayed behind with his family.

James first married Elizabeth Ann Brown, daughter of John Brown and Sarah Rhodes on March 13, 1853 in Marion, Missouri. From this union a daughter Rebecca A. was born, she is listed in the 1860 census with her father, her aunt Mary Priscilla Brown who by this time is married to James. Elizabeth died due to complications from childbirth.

James married second Mary Priscilla Brown on October, 29, 1856 in Marion Missouri. From this union these children are known:

John Francis Baxter 1857 – 1928
Henry James Baxter 1859 –
Susan M Baxter 1861 –
Ella Virginia Baxter 1864 – 1898

After the death of Mary Priscilla, James married third Eliza Jane Howell, according to documents her parents are James Howell and Eliza Brown. Other records show her father as John Howell. It is not known whether James Baxter and Eliza Jane had any children of their own.
