Caroline Lena Bausmann was born on March 3, 1861 in Wörrstad, Germany to Phillip Lorenz Bausmann and Maria Christina Unverrich. Around 1880, after her fathers death, Caroline removed from Germany and moved to the land where her uncles had moved to years before - Illinois.
Shortly after her immigration, Lena married George Kessel on May 19, 1883 in Brooklyn Township, Lee, Illinois. George was a 29 year old who was widowed two years before his marriage to Caroline. George had two children, Elizabeth Katherine (1878) and Anna Barbara (1880).
George and Lena had their first child, Ida Caroline Kessel, on May 5, 1884 in Brooklyn township. They had 8 more children: Mildred Elizabeth (1885), John Michael (1887), Lillian (1888), Clara Katherine (1890), Mabel Caroline (1892), Elmer Albert (1894), Lena M. (1897), and an infant child whose name we don't know.
