Darlene Mae was born June 13, 1931 the fifth child of William M. and Minnie (Schaefer) Baumgartner on a farm north of Strawberry Point, Iowa.

On November 25, 1955 Darlene was united in marriage to Charles R. Barker at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Strawberry Point. The couple made their home in Dundee, Iowa where they owned and operated Charlie's Place. After its sale, they operated the Backbone Drive-In. In 1960, Darlene went to work at the Family Bowl in Manchester. The couple later bought the Empire Building in Manchester in 1966, remodeled it and opened the Empire Cue, Café and Roller Rink. They operated this business over twenty-one years and sold it in 1988. Darlene then went on to work for the Deli-One, until retiring in June of 1996.

Darlene was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Dundee. She taught Bible and Sunday school and served on the church council. She was a member of the Manchester VFW Auxiliary. She was a voracious reader, particularly of biographies, and loved to work crossword puzzles. She enjoyed auctions, family reunions, and could not pass a garage sale. She was fascinated by her family roots and took a keen interest in the Baumgärtner family tree.

Darlene died Thursday, June 4, 2009 at the Boone County Hospital in Boone, Iowa after a brief llness. Darlene was survived by her sons, Jeffrey Barker of Toledo, Iowa and Dr. James (Julie) Barker of Boone and two grandchildren, Michael and Rachel Barker of Boone.

Darlene was preceded in death by her husband Charles in March of 2009; her parents William and Minnie Baumgartner; two brothers, Lawrence and William Jr. Baumgartner; and two sisters, Marie Hunt and Helen Adams.
