Amelia Marguerite Baumgartner, 95, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004.

The body was cremated and the remains buried in Halstead, Kan., next to the grave of her husband. Bridges Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She spent her childhood in Rochester, N.Y. She was the daughter of William and Amelia (Karle) Heydweiller.

She was a graduate of the University of Rochester, with a Ph.D. in ornithology from Cornell University. She wrote bird and nature articles for local and state papers for years. In 1975, she and her husband started Little Lewis Whirlwind Nature School and Sanctuary in Jay. They published Oklahoma Bird Life with the Oklahoma University Press in 1992.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick M. Baumgartner, in 1996 and a grandchild, Sarah Baumgartner in 1999.

Survivors include three sons, Ted A. Baumgartner, Athens, Ga., William M. Baumgartner, Ridgefield, Wash. and Karl H. Baumgartner, Richmond, Texas; one daughter, Barbara M. MacAlpine, San Antonio, Texas; eight grandchildren and one sister, Mary Benson, Saranac Lake, N.Y.
