Isabel A. (McCarthy) Bauman, age 98 passed away on Wednesday Nov. 3, 2004 at the Waunakee Manor Nursing Home. She was born on July 28, 1906 in the town of Rutland, the daughter of Harry and Marie (Clarnson) Almond. She graduated from Stoughton High School in 1924 and the Teacher's Training Course in 1925. She attended the University of Wisconsin and taught in rural Dane County schools. In 1928 she was united in marriage to Daniel McCarthy and he preceded her in death in 1942. They had one son, Duane Robert. In 1947 she married August Baumann and he preceded her in death in 1995. She was a longtime active resident of the Sun Prairie area. In 1937 she was selected by the Dane County Extension agent to be a part of a group of women to do a talk show once a month on radio station WIBA. On the program issues of interest to rural and urban listeners were discussed. The group, known as the "We Say What We Think Club," aired for more than 20 years. Isabel was the last surviving member. She was elected Treasurer of the Dane County Farm Bureau Women in 1937 and for the next 33 years, devoted much time and effort to the organization. In 1959, Isabel was elected state chair of the Wisconsin Farm Bureau for Women and a member of the board of directors of the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation. She developed a program of tours for members of the Farm Bureau and Wisconsin Extension Homemakers in 1964. This was a worthwhile program back then, as there was scarcity of organized travel for the rural people of Wisconsin. The group she organized became known as the "Wisconsin Town & Country Travelers." And for 21 years she arranged and escorted at least 100 tours ranging from one day jaunts to tours of 24 days in length. These travels included every state in the union, every province in Canada, Mexico and 17 European countries. Mrs. Baumann was a 4-H leader for more than 15 years and taught parliamentary procedures to newly elected officers for many years. In 1971, she was awarded the Friends of 4-H for outstanding service to the Wisconsin 4-H Council and was recognized by the University of Wisconsin College of Agriculture and Life Sciences for Meritorious Service to agriculture. She was a member of the Stoughton Area Retired Teachers Association, Dane County Extension Homemakers, Twentieth Century Club and St. Mary's Court 626 Catholic Order of Foresters. Mrs. Baumann is survived by her son, Duane McCarthy of Sun Prairie; her grandchildren, Daniel (Diane) McCarthy of Poysippi, and Donna Brunner and Diane Witte, both of Black Earth, her great-grandchildren, Tina McCarthy, Nicole McCarthy, Heather Brunner, Ashley Brunner, Joshua Witte, Jacob Witte and Jordan Meyer, other relatives and friends. A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004 from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Cress Funeral Home, 1310 Emerald Terrace, Sun prairie. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Friends of the Sun Prairie Library would be appreciated. A special thanks to the staff at Waunakee Manor for all their loving care these past years.
