Bertha was born in Ruhnow, Pomerania, Germany. She came with her family to America, arriving in New York on April 15, 1883 from Germany on the vessel Strassburg. They settled in Le Mars IA and then moved to Parkston SD. There she married George John Baum. George and Bertha had five children, Frank, born in 1890; Alvin, born in 1893; Martha, born in 1896; Lester, born in 1899; and Nettie, born in 1902. In March of 1903, the family moved to a farm three miles south and one mile East of Halstead, Kansas.
