Anna (Baum) Hillier Avery, 95, died in Concord NH on October 29, 2011, following a long period of declining health. She was born in Bath ME on October 7, 1916, to Arthur E. and Grace (Duncan) Baum. She was raised on Portsmouth NH and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School in 1935. She graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1939 with honors; she was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Mortar Board, both honorary societies. She worked in the UNH publicity department and then for the News Bureau at Cornell University. In 1940 she married Donald Thomas Hillier from Lancaster NH. They moved to Binghamton NY and had four children. She later began her career as an elementary school teacher in the Chenango Valley (NY) Central School System. In 1957 she married William Henry Avery, Jr., a native of Concord. In 1962 they moved to Concord, where she taught at the Summer Street School in Penacook NH until retiring in 1973. Anna took a lively interest in the world around her and was active in numerous civic, political, and religious organizations. She was a charter member of the Pierce Brigade, which preserved and now maintains the home of our 14th President, Franklin Pierce. She held a variety of offices in the Brigade and was involved in all aspects of its work for decades. She was treasurer of the Concord Women's Club, active in the New Hampshire Historical Society, and a volunteer for NARAL and NH Peace Action. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Concord where she held leadership positions in the United Methodist Women and in Church Women United. Anna will be remembered by family and friends for her beautiful smile, cheerful nature, high energy, and very independent spirit.

She was predeceased by her husbands and by her brothers Ralph Warren of Bath ME and Earle Warren of Chicago IL.

She is survived by her four children and their spouses: Margaret Hillier and John Card of Kensington CA, Katherine Hillier and Edward Loranger of Plymouth, Thomas Hillier and Susan (Falconer) of Ashfield MA, and Donald Hillier and Lisa (Newell) of Pleasant Hill CA; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
