Clinton MO - Mrs. Barbara Heckler died January 10, death being caused by injuries received when she fell and broke her hip two weeks ago. She was born in Dreseau, Germany and came to Jefferson City when she was six. After her marriage, she and her husband came to Clinton in 1866, erecting a log cabin on what is now the east side of the square, on the site now occupied by the Heckler building. Later they went into the hotel business and the Heckler House was one of the best known hotels in western Missouri in the early days. At one time, Mr. and Mrs. Heckler could have purchased the entire eastern part of Clinton for only $600 and it now is worth perhaps a million dollars. Mr. Heckler died 32 years ago and she conducted the hotel business, retiring several years ago. Survived by seven sisters, two brothers, two grandchildren, Miss Barbara Seifried of Clinton and Harry Gerrard of St. Louis and two nieces, Mrs. Charles Pearson and Mrs. John Lorenz of Clinton. Short funeral services will be held at the home on the east side of the square, with burial in Jefferson City by her husband. She was a faithful Episcopalian.
