Hank Bauer

Death: Feb. 9, 2007

Major League Baseball Player, Manager. Born Henry Albert Bauer, in East St. Louis, Illinois. He was an outfielder for fourteen seasons (1948 to 1961) with the New York Yankees and Kansas City Athletics. During his career, Bauer was a member of nine American League Pennant-winning teams (1949 to 1953, 1955 to 1958 Yankees) and seven World Championship teams (1949 to 1953, 1956, 1958 Yankees). During the 1958 World Series against the Milwaukee Braves, Bauer hit 4 homeruns and had a .323 batting average. In 53 World Series games, he had 46 hits. He was a member of three American League All Star Teams (1952 to 1954). After retiring as a player, Bauer was a manager for eight seasons (1961 to 1962, 1964 to 1969) with the Kansas City Athletics, Baltimore Orioles and Oakland Athletics. In 1966, he guided the Orioles to the World Series Title and was named Manager of the Year that season. He also worked as a scout for the Yankees and Kansas City Royals. During World War II, Bauer served in the US Marines. In 1544 career regular season games as a player, he had 1424 hits with a .277 lifetime batting average. As manager, Bauer had a record of 594 wins and 544 losses. He died of cancer. (bio by: C.S.)

One of the Orioles of 1966 said of Hank Bauer that "under that tough exterior is a tough interior" as he inspired the team to winning the American League pennant and sweeping the Dodgers in the World Series. Hank Bauer was a tenacious guy.
