Lucy Martin Plummer, one of 11 known children born to Kemp Plummer (1769-1825) & Susan Martin (ca 1776-1838), prominent citizens of Warrenton, Warren County, NC. Her father was born in Gloucester Co, VA and was educated at William & Mary and served in the House of Commons and Senate. He was also a Major in the French & Indian Wars. Both her parents are buried in the Plummer Cemetery in Warrenton, NC.

Lucy married Hon. William Horn Battle on May 18, 1825 in Warren County, NC. She was mother to 10 known children:

* Julian Plummer Battle (1826-1827)
* Dr. Joel Dossey Battle (1828-1858)
* Susan Catherine Battle (1830-1867)
* Kemp Plummer Battle (1831-1919)
* Dr. William Horn Battle (1833-1893)
* Richard Henry Battle (1835-1912)
* Thomas Devereux Battle (1837-1837)
* Mary Johnston Battle (1840-1865)
* Julius Cullen Battle (1841-1862)
* Wesley Lewis Battle (1843-1863)

Her two youngest sons (Junius and Wesley) were killed in the Civil War. Junius Cullen Battle died Oct 2, 1852 at South Mountain, VA following an amputation. Wesley Lewis Battle died Aug 22, 1863 in a hospital following the battle of Gettysburg.

Daughter, Mary Johnston Battle, married William Van Wyck of Alamaba on July 24, 1861 in Chapel Hill, and removed to New York City where her husband was an attorney. She died May 31, 1865 in Harlem, NY one day after the birth of her daughter, Mary Battle Van Wyck (1865-1952). Mary's sister-in-law, Lydia Ann Maverick Van Wyck Hoke is buried here in Oakwood. After her death, William Van Wyck married (2nd) in 1880 to Harriet "Hallie" Reynolds Early of Baltimore.

Lucy died 1874, one month shy of her 69th birthday. Her widowed husband survived her about 5 years, passing in 1879 at age 76.
