Jewell K. Battle died Wednesday, October 15, 2008, at Moses Cone Hospital.

The memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, October 25, at St. Francis. The Rev. Michael Moulden and The Rev. Jamie L'Enfant officiating.

Jewell was born in Baltimore, Maryland, to Joseph and Jewel Kearns. She enjoyed an active life joining new groups and churches in different states and Puerto Rico where her husband (Tom) was transferred. She helped organize and wrote the By-Laws for the first wives support group for the Jaycees while living in Hagerstown, Md. While in Puerto Rico, she volunteered to teach English a few days a week in the public schools. She was active in various programs at St. Francis Church. She played golf and helped organize the first ladies group at Bel-Aire Golf Course in 1976. In Greensboro, Jewell was also a member of The Civil Air Patrol, an Auxiliary of the Air Force for 20 years, retiring with the rank of Lt. Col. She worked on and off through the years but the favorite part of her life was being a stay at home mom to her four children.

Jewell graduated from Notre Dame Preparatory School and went on to Bard Avon School of Business. Years later, she attended UNCG.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Jewel Kearns; brothers, Joseph and Douglas and Thomas, her husband of 24 years.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Battle, of Greensboro; sister, Jane Wagner of Ocean Pines, Md.; daughter, Kathleen (Kassey) Dorsch and her son, Zachary Stevenson of Rehoboth Beach, Del.; sons, J. Joseph Dorsch and wife, Angela and their sons, John Thomas, and Christopher of Spring, Texas, T. James Dorsch and wife, Katherine and son, Thomas I. of Los Gatos, Calif.; son, Patrick F. Dorsch and daughter, Natalie of Atlanta, Ga.; and a step daughter, Cheryl D. of Visalia, Calif.; stepson, Richard D., and his son, Richard G. Battle of Herndon, Va.
