Last Saturday Dr. F.O. Norris received a telegram to start immediately for Waco to see Col. O.L. Battle, who was very ill, and before starting Sunday morning a dispatch was received announcing his death. Col. Battle was for many years a resident of this county [Wharton], and is well and favorably known here, as a man of superior abilities, and a great moral worth. What the nature of malady was, we have not yet learned. Colorado Citizen, March 11, 1886, page 3.

Col. O.L. Battle died at his residence on 5th street yesterday, age 67. Born Morgan Co., Georgia, March 2, 1819. To Wharton Co., Texas in 1846. To Waco in 1871. Father of Mrs. Belle Ficklen. Buried at Oakwood. Waco Daily Examiner, 1886. Tue., Mar. 9.

On September 27, 1860, Oliver Battle was a passenger in the Gulf of Mexico on board the steamboat Bayou City. She was bound from Galveston to Houston, and when about to make a landing at Lynchburg, her boilers burst with terrific explosion and fearful result. Among those who died was Oliver's brother-in-law, Isaiah Irvin, Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives. Irvin was seen rushing aft, and it is believed he jumped overboard and was drowned.
