J. R. Jack Batten, 77, passed away suddenly on March 24. 2010, at his home in Deweyville, Texas.

Jack was born in Franklin, Texas to John Henry and Mina Klein Batten, on October 4, 1932, the oldest of six children. He grew up, in Tabor, and held a love in his heart for that part of Texas. He was a member of Cottonwood Baptist Church. Jack raised his family in Clute, Texas, while working for Dow Chemical. He was a kind man who never met a stranger, loving to visit and joke. He had a special place in his heart for children, spoiling them whenever possible.

Jack is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jeannine Elliot "Neenie" Batten, his parents; John and Mina Batten, two brothers; Bob Batten and Richard Batten, and one sister, Margaret "Sissy" Niski.

He is survived by his daughter, Jackie Linn Batten Martin and husband, Jeff, of Lake Jackson, Texas, sister, Nelda Bishop and husband, Bud, of Hearne, Texas, one brother, Ralph Batten, of Franklin, his wife's sister, Cheryl E. Cobb and husband, Ralph, of College Station, sister in law's; Madlyn Batten, of Tabor and Peggy Pratt, of Milano, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, and special friend, Dorothy Rheel and family of Deweyville, Texas. He will be missed by all who knew him, and not the least by his many four-legged buddies, especially his constant companion, Harley.

Visitation from noon until 3 p.m. on Saturday the 27th will be at the Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan, Texas. A service will follow with Louie Walston officiating.

There will be a visitation on Sunday the 28th from 1 until 4 p.m., at the Restwood Funeral Home, in Clute, Texas. A service will be held on Monday the 29th at 2 p.m., in the Restwood Chapel, with Pastor Rodney Coates officiating. Following the service Mr. Batten will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, at Restwood Memorial Park, adjacent to the chapel
