He was born Sept. 20, 1924, in Los Angeles to Edgar and Erma Ringer Bates. He married Verla Slott in 1950. They divorced in 1969. He married Paula Evans in 1984. She died in 2001.
Bates served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked in logging, sheet metal and construction.
Survivors include four sisters, Dorothy Strawn of Albuquerque, N.M., Donna Van Sickle of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Dolly Bates of Creswell and Darlene Workman of Springfield; three brothers, Dale of Eugene, Vern of Creswell and Tim of Springfield.
A private service is planned. Arrangements by Springfield Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home.
