He was born in Bingham, Maine, the son of Josiah and Serina Bates, but spent most of his life in Moro on a farm.
Early in life he was married to Miss Martha Taber, together they traveled life's pathway until her death several years ago. To them were born a family of eight children, three girls and five sons of which six still survive, Geo. W. of Moncton, N.B., Mrs. F. O. Bates of Patten, Lincoln of Houlton, Ruinie of Hersey and John, the youngest, who with his wife cared for him, beside a large number of grandchildren and great grandchildren and many friends to mourn their loss.
Funeral services were held from the home January 11, Rev. I. H. Lidstone officiating. Burial in Moro Cemetery in the family lot.
It was not to thee a day of dread
To cross that country of the dead
For a noble one has been thy life
And thou art free from this world of strife.
