John L. "Hop" Bates Jr., 65, of McComb, died Oct. 8, 2008, at his residence.
Visitation is 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Cook's Enterprise Funeral Home in McComb, with family hour from 6 to 7 p.m. Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Free Will Baptist Church, with Elder James Banks, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Dinah Cemetery No. 2.
Mr. Bates was born Nov. 8, 1942, in Pike County to John L. "Hop" Bates Sr. and Mary Ashley Bates. He was retired from the Mississippi Regional Housing Authority and was a member of St. Mary No. 1 Free Will Baptist Church. He was a 1960 graduate of Burglund High School and attended Tougaloo College. He loved fishing, hunting and cooking for friends and family. He was a Mason and member of Isaac Progressive Lodge No. 20. He received numerous awards, including one from the Housing Management Institute.
Mr. Bates was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Mador Lewis Bates and Aaron Bates and Ellen and Billy Ashley; and a brother-in-law, Charles Carr.
Survivors include a loving, devoted wife, Dorothy Bates of McComb; two sons and daughters-in-law, Vice Bishop John and Janice Bates of McComb, and Juan and Lakeshia Thompson of Killeen, Texas; three daughters, Sandra Faust of Houston, Texas, Comesha Tucker of McComb and Nekeia Thompson of Purvis; three sisters-in-law, Jeanne Carr, Carolyn Patterson and Lorrine Jefferson and husband Ricky; seven brothers-in-law and their wives, Joe Lewis and Bertha Carr, Harry James and Annie Carr, Fredrick and Rhonda Carr, Larry and Ethel Carr, Victor and Donnis Carr, Otis and Mamie Washington and Clayton Washington; special friends, Robert "Huddie" Williams, Tony Caston, Reonya Dickerson, Tony Bonds and Patricia Bickham; eight grandchildren, Cassandra, Robin, Isis, Kiajuana, Juaneisha, Keshawn, Ran-iysha and Juan Darrius; a great-grandchild, Madison Faust; and a host of special cousins, other relatives, church family and friends.
