Luther Bates, 37 Mayberry Courts, died in a Nashville Hospital September 27 following a long illness. He was 77 years old.
Funeral services were conducted September 29 in the chapel of Gallant Funeral Home with the Rev. Dewey Cantrell and the Rev. J. W. Atchley officiating. Burial was in the Riverview Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Bates, a retired farmer, was a native of Lincoln County. He was a member of the Baptist Church and was the son of the late William and Matilda Powers Bates.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Pauline Pitts Bates; three daughters, Mrs. Lou Emmy Gautney, Mrs. Lydia Thrasher, and Mrs. Hazel Hickson; four sons, William, Alton, Johnnie, and Luther Bates; four step-daughters, Mrs. Decie Besherse, Mrs. Maudie Lee Davis, Mrs. Juanita Ortney, and Mrs. Mildred Harris; one foster daughter, Mrs. Beatrice Lowe; five step-sons, Walter Tucker, Fordon Towery, Herman, Cecil, and Wilburn Armstrong; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 15 step-grandchildren; and six step-great grandchildren.
