Mrs. Pearl M. Bates, 83, Ottumwa route 6, died suddenly at her home today.
Born in Wapello county, September 2, 1870, she was the daughter of Michael and Adah Gullion Ware. She had lived in Wapello county nearly all of her life. She was married to Samuel Lewis Bates, March 26, 1890. He preceded her in death on March 2, 1953.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Irene Hathaway of Des Moines and Mrs. Florence Barrett of Dallas Center; three sons, Alvin Bates of Dallas Center, and Lawrence Bates and Cecil Bates, both of Ottumwa; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, and two brothers, Charles Ware of Ottumwa, and Ray Ware of Bloomfield route 10.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son and daughter, three sisters and seven brothers.
Funeral services will be held at the Johnson funeral chapel at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in charge of the Rev. H.E. Goldsboro, pastor of the Free Methodist church. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery.
