He graduated from Windsor High School in 1947, and held the state track record for the mile run for 4 years. Darl married Dorothy Keller in 1948. They had 2 children. They later divorced and he married Jane Freidank in 1963 in Greeley.
Darl worked for Mountain Bell his entire career, retiring in 1984. He lived in Sterling, Denver and Grand Junction. He belonged to the Greeley Elks and was a lifetime member. He also belonged to the Telephone Pioneers and the First Congregational Church. After retirement he spent many hours doing volunteer work in the community and also started his own business as a handyman.
He enjoyed gardening, football, golf, barbequing and spending time with his family.
Darl is survived by his wife, one daughter, one granddaughter, one grandson, and two great-grandchildren [survivors names omitted].
He was preceded in death by his sister Vera Bennet; his brother Donald Bates; his son Richard Bates; and grandson Allyn Sewald.
Visitation will be held from 9 to 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 13, 2014 with services beginning at 10:00 a.m. at First Congregational Church. A private interment will be held at Lakeview Cemetery.
