Ernest Bates Jr., 61, of Flat Creek died Sunday (March 19, 1989) at Bedford County General Hospital.

Funeral services were conducted yesterday at Gowen-Smith Guardian Chapel in Shelbyville with the Rev. Bob Payne officiating. Burial followed in the Rosebank Cemetery in Flat Creek.

An employee of the Moore County Highway Dept. he was the son of the late Ernest Bates Sr. and Alease Gray Bates of Fayetteville who survives.

In addition to his mother he is survived by his wife, Alice Helen Warren Bates of Flat Creek; two sons, Larry Bates and Danny Bates, both of Flat Creek; a daughter, Carolyn Ann Bates Summer of Bedford County; eight brothers, Paul Bright Brown Sr. of Flat Creek, James Ray Brown, Dale Brown, Joe Brown, Ronnie Brown, Jackie Brown, Frankie Brown and Jimmy Brown, all of Lincoln County; three sisters, Louise Lambert of Baton Rouge, La., Nancy Tucker of Michigan and Gale Dale of Lincoln County; and seven grandchildren.
