Services for Charles Thomas Bates Jr., 81, Ada, are 11 a.m. Saturday at the Oak Avenue Baptist Church, the Revs. Ray Talbott and Kenneth Elkins will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Criswell Funeral Home. Mr. Bates died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006, at a local hospital. He was born Feb. 24, 1925, in Ada to Charles T. Bates Sr. and Docia Grififin Bates. He received a bachelor of science degree from Oklahoma State University, a master's degree in administration and education from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wis., and post doctorate work at Cornell University in Ithiaca, N.Y. He was an honorary State Farmer of Kansas FFA chapter at Kansas State Convention in 1989 at Manhattan, Kan. He received a Distinguised Service Award, U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club of Fredonia, Kansas in 1955 for Top Man of the Year. Mr. Bates was the owner of farm and land in Oklahoma and Kansas for 18 years raising and showing purebred Aberdeen Angus cattle for 15 years.
He served as County 4-H Agent in McPherson County, Kansas, from 1956 until 1960. And he served as State 4-H Specialist and Faculty member at Kansas State University with appointment of U.S. D. A. for 30 years from 1961-1991. Mr. Bates retired Dec. 1, 1991, and he and his wife moved to Ada. Mr. Bates was a member and ordained deacon at Oak Avenue Baptist Church, serving as coordinator of Lay Witness Renewal missions for 20 years in 35 local churches in Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Ireland. He served on the Sunday School Board of Southern Baptist Convention in Nashville, Tennessee for eight years. He married LaVerne R. Gaar June 20, 1948, in Ada. Survivors include his wife, LaVerne Bates, of the home; two sons, Dennis C. Bates, Boston, Massachusetts, and Byron T. Bates, Dallas, Texas; two brothers, W. "Jack" Bates and wife Pansy, Ada, and James R. Bates and wife Swan, Prairie Village, Kan.; and one grandson, Brandon C. Bates, Dallas, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents. Bearers will be Floyd Holman, Ron Carson, David Eidson, Dwight Hart, Claude Miller, Dennis Story, Bill Timothy, and Farrell Rhoads.
