RIPLEY - James Lawrence Bates, 66, died Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at Tippah County Hospital. He was born Sept. 3, 1944, to Lawrence I. Bates and Pattie Etta Hopper Bates. He was a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. He worked at American Biltrite for 38 and a half years as a chemist. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Ripley Funeral Home with Dr. Jack B. Bennett and Rev. Terry Ray Vuncannon officiating. Burial will be in Tippah Memorial Garden. Ripley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Bobbie A. Bates of Ripley; four sisters, Estell Robertson, Patty Grant (David) and Linda Koon (Ray), all of Ripley, and Patricia Talley (Jerry) of Walnut; three brothers, Rhudell Bates (Mildred) of Middleton, Lee Bates (Betty) of Danvers, Ill., and Jeff Bates (Janice) of Falkner; a special nephew, Richard Jeter of Ripley; a caregiver, James Gates; a special cousin, Sharon Mardis of Tiplersville; a caregiver, Jean Goforth; a special friend, Joan Barkley Cox; two godchildren, Stephanie Morris and Jake Barkley; special grandchildren, Chanston Jeter, Morgan Jeter and Easton Gates; 20 nieces and nephews; and 47 great and great-great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Kenneth Bates.
Pallbearers will be Billy Hopper, Frank Adair, Ronnie Stewart, Sidney Rainey Jr., Dewayne Hopkins and James Gates.
Honorary Pallbearers will be nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
