Herman married Hazel Adair Cruson on August 1, 1942 in Houston, Missouri. In addition to gaining a stepson, Gary Barton, their union was blessed with five children; Carol, Sharon, Marsha, Bill and Rickey.
Mr. Bates was a sawmill worker and spent most of his life in the Success and Roby, Missouri area before retiring. After retirement he and Hazel moved to Licking.
He was preceded in death by his stepson, Gary Barton, and three brothers; Howard, Lloyd and Edward, and two grandchildren. Surviving are his wife, Hazel, their five children; Carole Arms of Licking, Sharon Posten of Richland, Marsha Haley of Muskegon, Michigan, Bill Bates of Avondale, Arizona, and Rickey Bates of the home, two brothers; Virgil Lee Bates of Lecompton, Kansas and Quentin Bates of Harrisonville, Missouri, and one sister; Ora Gooding of Licking, Missouri, nine grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Services were March 19 at Fox Funeral Home Chapel in Licking with The Reverend David Jett and The Reverend Curtis Yarnell officiating. Burial was in the Licking Cemetery.
