Ben Bates, 51 Succumbs Here

Ben Bates, 52, special officer with the Texas & Pacific railroad for the past 20 years, died at his residence, 3002 Grape, at 6:50 a.m. today of a heart attack. He had been in ill health for several months.

Funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Kiker-Warren chapel. A graveside the Masonic lodge of which he was a member.

Pallbearers will be Judge Milburn Long, Gene Williams, O. G. Baxter, Virgil Waldrop, W. W. West, Jess Warren, Earl Calhoun. and W. B. Poston.

Mr. Bates was born in Roberson county, Texas August 2, 1893. He served in the 90th division in World War I. After his discharge from the Army, he lived and worked on the Pima Indian reservation near Phoenix, Ariz. He and Ida C. Massey, a nurse on the reservation who also had served in that capacity in the 90th division, were married in 1920 at Phoenix.

The couple moved to Dallas in 1921. They lived in a number of Texas towns after Mr. Batss became associated with the T&P railroad. They moved to Abilene in 1930 and have made their home here since that time.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Ben L. Jr., Raymond and Wayne, all of Abilene; three daughters, Mrs. Lester Schulz, nurse at Hendrick Memorial hospital, Leta, technician at Hendrick Memorial hospital, and Mozelle, nurse at St. Ann hospital; his father, T. J. Bates of Dallas.
