FORT WORTH -- Roy Albert Bateman, 91, a caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died on his birthday, Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004.

Funeral: 2 p.m. Wednesday at Southcliff Baptist Church, the Rev. Herbert "Butch" Riddle Jr. and Dr. Carroll Marr officiating. Burial: Laurel Land Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Thompson's Harveson & Cole Funeral Home.

Memorials: Vitas Hospice Care, 2501 Parkview Drive, Suite 600, Fort Worth, Texas 76102; Southcliff Baptist Church Building Fund; or a charity of choice.

Roy Bateman was born Oct. 3, 1913, in Fort Worth. He was one of nine children born to Dan and Marian Bateman. Roy came to know Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior at the age of 13. He married Margie McLain on Oct. 19, 1935, and enjoyed their 67 years of marriage until her death in July 2003.

Roy served his Lord faithfully at Tabernacle Baptist Church, Evans Avenue Baptist Church and Southcliff Baptist Church. He was instrumental in the union of Westcliff Baptist Church and Evans Avenue Baptist Church to form Southcliff Baptist Church. He was a longtime historian and was a deacon emeritus. He also organized and directed the senior adult choir and was a member of the long-range planning committee.

Roy graduated from Polytechnic High School in 1934. He attended TCU and earned his CPA in 1946. He became administrator of the Fort Worth city retirement fund in 1948, was assistant city secretary-treasurer in 1952 and served as city secretary-treasurer from 1955 until his retirement in 1976. During his tenure as secretary-treasurer, he especially enjoyed swearing in the new police officers and firefighters. He was a member of numerous certified public accountancy organizations.

The family would like to express love and appreciation to the staff and residents of Broadway Plaza Healthcare.

Survivors: Daughters, Carol Anne Riddle and her husband, Herbert, of Fort Worth and Kathy Hand and her husband, Bill, of Granbury; grandchildren, Butch and Glenda Riddle, Truett and Julie Webster, Ben and Lori Eynon, James and Kerri Patterson, William and Barbara Hand and Brady and Carol Bryan; 16 great-grandchildren; eight nieces; and three nephews
